We are actively shaping change – for our customers, our employees and society. As an insurance company, sustainability is a key issue for us – from tackling the consequences of climate change to investing in renewable energies. That is why we integrate environmental, social and governance aspects into our business activities and have firmly anchored them in our Group strategy. Our sustainability strategy is based on four key areas of action: insurance technology, capital investment, our own operations, and social and governance issues.
We are working consistently to reduce our emissions and aim to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality in our own operations by 2030 (including offsetting remaining emissions). Our employees also benefit from our reduction measures: discounted job tickets throughout Germany for commuting and leisure, flexible working time models and the option of mobile working support both the environment and work-life balance.
Our sustainability strategy explained briefly
Capital investment
The strategic focus in capital investment is on reducing the portfolio's greenhouse gas emissions, with the ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Approaches to this include phasing out financing for particularly environmentally harmful business models, such as thermal coal, reducing investments in the oil and gas sector, and investing in sustainable infrastructure such as wind farms, solar parks, electricity grids and sustainable transport infrastructure. To underpin our ambition, we have set ourselves the goal of reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of our liquid investment portfolio by 55% by 2030 compared to the base year 2019.
Insurance technology
The strategic focus in sustainable insurance technology is on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our insurance portfolio in order to achieve our ambition of net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes Group-wide exclusions for thermal coal risks, new greenfield oil and gas projects, oil sands extraction and deep-sea mining. At the same time, we see ourselves as a partner to industry and support our customers in their sustainable transformation – with risk analyses, insurance solutions for renewable energies and coverage for innovative technologies.
Our own operations
We have set ourselves the goal of achieving greenhouse gas neutrality (including offsetting remaining emissions) by 2030 at the latest. Although the emissions from our own operations are low compared to our value chain, we are consistently reducing our footprint. To this end, we use electricity from renewable energies, optimise office space utilisation and are electrifying our vehicle fleet in Germany.
Social responsibility and governance
We take responsibility for people and society. To this end, we have created a framework for our decentralised commitment that encompasses four strategic areas of action: diversity, equal opportunities and inclusion, the employee journey, access to education and access to infrastructure. Each Group unit selects its own projects, thereby contributing locally to the implementation of our sustainability strategy.Strong governance is equally important. This is ensured within the Group by specialised experts in areas such as compliance, corporate office and cyber security. In this way, we create transparency, integrity and security in our processes.
Please note that this is an abridged version of our exclusions. You can find the full description in our current sustainability statement.
